Bad Weather Days

Tuesday morning we got Elaine ready for school and tried to drop her off, but there was not a car in the school's parking lot! School was cancelled, even though weather was not that bad. It was 30 degrees and misting, but not anything too gross. We didn't even think to look into school closings, because we thought the weather was nothing too special. Then by that night the mist became icey rain. I closed the store at 5pm, because Denton was starting to get sleet. We heard the sleet was gonna pick up as soon as the sun set, so I made the decision to close the store, before the night shift of co-workers came to work. I didn't want Jen to get to work and then not be able to get home on the icey roads. I called Rick and he backed up my decision.
I called Rick about the bad weather since I knew they would be driving home in it. This is one of those times when it's nice that I'm friends with my bosses. Rick and Regina didn't want to drive back from the costume convention in the sleet storm, so they drove back early this morning. Today was my day off, so Rick and Regina didn't open the store until like one in the afternoon. I talked to Regina on the phone some today, but I can't wait to hear about all the new costumes they've ordered from the costume convention! :)

Denton ISD was closed again today, so we had both kids home to entertain.

I finally put batteries inside Allan's Lightning McQueen toy today. He LOVES it. I mean, he already loved it when it was silent... but now the race car talks, makes "vroom vroom" noises AND it's wheels spin strong enough to pull the car across our carpet or ZOOM it across our kitchen tile. Allan is super excited.

For fun, Jim and she made dinner together while I kept Allan busy with blowing bubbles.

Both of them are hamming it up

Jim and Elaine made lasagna, salad and garlic bread.

P.S. - Elaine is reading 'Charlotte's Web'.

Not much new here

Allan has taken over a Thousand photos of himself with the webcam. Looking through them is like looking through a Flip book. In the photos, I've watched him eat crackers, frame by frame. He also parades his Robots and favorite toys for the camera. He can turn on the webcam all by himself and snap photos on his own. Elaine is less interested in the webcam, but she hams it up for the camera every once in a while.

mmmm crackers

whatcha got there Lainey? Chex mix?

He likes parking his toys in view of the camera.

This is when I first showed Allan how to work the camera.

I brought my laptop to work with me all last week to type up costume/accessory inventory. All the girls were doing inventory by hand and had to erase or re-write stuff when merchandise sold. I typed it all up and emailed it to Rick, so he can just edit it all on his computer now.

I've been working weird hours this week since my bosses are at the costume convention in Houston. They hired a new girl, Cassie, last week. I'm kinda on the fence about whether I like her or not. Last week Cassie asked if I am a manager or what? Rick said that he considers Yvette and I both Assistant Managers, but that I have extra responsibilities. It's nice to hear him call me an Assistant Manager instead of a keyholder. April Fools day is my year-and-a-half anniversary at the store.
There is a big sale going on for the next month, beginning today. It's the store's 30th Anniversary. All dancewear is 10-30% off.

Jim and Robert took the kids to glow-in-the dark Putt Putt tonight inside the mall. I had vouchers for four free games of golf (a perk of being a mall employee). Allan got some hole-in-ones. They played fifty-something holes, then picked me up from work.
--------------------

I've been reading my book about learning to drive. I want to go get my learner's permit very soon. When I get home from work, I've been watching re-runs of 'Lost' and reading that book in bed. We'll save lots of gas when I can drive myself to work. Jim could walk Elaine to school.

There is supposed to be an Ice Storm tomorrow.

Carjacking Ended in our Front Yard

Alleged shooter, hijacker captured

Suspected burglar shoots at homeowner, then pulls driver into police chase
11:30 PM CST on Tuesday, January 6, 2009
By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

An apparent burglar fired several shots at a homeowner and then hijacked a cancer patient at gunpoint in a getaway attempt Tuesday afternoon, according to sheriff’s officials.

The suspect was taken into custody after an extended chase.

The homeowner arrived about 1:30 p.m. at his house in the 7600 block of FM2164, in the Redding Ranch development just north of Denton city limits. He noticed a blue Ford Super Cab pickup parked in his yard, but it sped away. Then he saw that the front door of the house had been kicked in and was standing open, said Denton County Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Caley.

The homeowner remained in his vehicle, called 911 and began backing away.

But a man ran out from the house and began firing an AR-15 rifle at the homeowner, Caley said. At least one shot hit the windshield, but the homeowner was not injured.

Then the suspect ran into the roadway and flagged down a passing sport utility vehicle. He entered the vehicle and held a .45 automatic pistol to the driver’s head, telling him to speed away and giving directions on which way to drive, according to the crime report.

A sheriff’s deputy on his way to work was passing nearby at the time and was able to radio the location and a description of the SUV, allowing several sheriff’s deputies, constable’s deputies, police from Denton and Aubrey, and highway patrol officers to begin trying to stop the vehicle.

They did not know at the time whether the driver of the car was a suspect or a hijack victim, Caley said.

Law enforcement officers followed the car up and down county roads north and east of Denton until it entered Woodhaven Manufactured Home Community, formerly Silver Dome Mobile Home Park, off Silver Dome Road at the east end of King’s Row.

With several squad cars in pursuit, the hijacked driver lost control on one of the narrow, winding roads in the mobile home community and crashed the car into a yard. (OUR YARD!!!)

“He is very ill with cancer, and he’s very shaken up,” the captain said of the hijack victim. “He had a gun held to his head the whole time, and when the car stopped, the other guy got out of the car and laid the gun in the victim’s lap. He tried to tell the officers that he was the victim and that the driver had a gun. The driver told us there was a gun in his lap but it wasn’t his gun. This guy has an extensive criminal record, and we believed the victim.”

Names of the homeowner and the hijacking victim were not immediately released. Deputies called an ambulance for the hijacking victim, and he was taken to a Denton emergency room to be checked out.

Wallace Eugene Judkins, 38, whom they believe was burglarizing the house and took the car at gunpoint, has been charged with burglary, attempted capital murder, aggravated kidnapping, assault on a peace officer and fleeing apprehension. Bail had not been set by Tuesday evening.

He remains in sheriff’s custody.

According to Denton County judicial records, Judkins lives at the mobile home park. He has several arrests and convictions for burglary and other crimes. His last arrest was May 12 on a parole violation. He was released in July.

Jim called me at work and told me that he heard a bunch of sirens go by in the neighborhood. When he went out on our front porch a bunch of County Sheriff's wearing Kevlar and holding guns ordered Jimmy back inside our house. They were parked across from our house, putting on all their bullet proof gear.

Jim went back inside the trailer and moments later he heard a thud. Jim looked through my office window and saw a car in our yard squeezed between our rose bushes and the crapemertle tree. Police officers pulled out the driver and the passenger and arrested them in the front yard around 2pm.

Jim had to ask permission to leave our house in the van to fetch Elaine from school. Around 4pm there were still a dozen officers in the yard. Our landlord came out to look at the trailer to make sure there wasn't any damage. It's all fine, besides some tire marks in the mud.

Allan's Birthday (a day early)

I was off from work today (Sunday), but I work tomorrow evening. So this Sunday was a better day to celebrate Allan's birthday, compared to on his ACTUAL birthday.

The one thing he asked for was a "Transformers cake". This is what I came up with. I didn't want to spend a lot on a cake that was covered in pricey Transformers-themed stuff, when I knew Allan would be easily pleased.
The symbol on the cake was the tag that was on his Transformers PJs. Hooray for resourcefulness. :) He saw it and said "Thank you so much for my Transformer cake, Mommy" Awwwww

Allan's Sunday school teacher gave him the birthday boy crown today. We asked if he was a king or a prince? Allan said, "no, I'm just Allan." I'd ask, but what about the birthday hat? Allan replied, "that's just my crown." He's so low key sometimes! It cracks me up.
Tonight the kids played with playdoh and watched a StarWars movie that was on TV. So they had a pretty good time.

This is when he was about to blow out the candle.

I love how Allan's ears are bent down

During the crazy Christmas sales, I got Allan a new VeggieTale movie (Gideon: the tuba warrior) and a new Wiggles DVD. Each dvd was $5 or less. :)

Pics at work today

Wednesday Steven took me to Famous Footwear and bought me new Nikes. I think they were for Christmas, but they were really a practical need. My $12 Payless sneakers were falling apart. It was nice to see Steven again. He says he's gonna make it up to Denton more, now that he has more free time. He wants to be more involved with Jim and the kids. He is their godfather, after all.

Today at work I needed to clean off the Christmas Window. Tomorrow I will paint a Valentines window. I took pics of the window (and the store) before cleaning off the Nativity scene.
