Stressing

I've been diving into my school work this week. We've only got about two weeks left of school, so I have quizzes and finals all coming up. Plus I am working on this apron project for Design class. It's hard to describe but the overall look is gonna be a 50's style apron made out of magazines and newspapers. The project is about using recycle-able materials. I have a lot of work to still do on it. Classmates are bringing me tons of magazines to cut up. :)
I picked up the check for $800 from the Memorial Loan office. I need to take the check over to student accounting and sign it over to UNT, to pay the majority of my summer tuition. Did I mention, I already own the textbook for the summer class? So, that's handy.
I've been super-stressed and trying to just pray about everything. I've pulled out the big dry-erase calendar and marked in due-dates for my different projects, tests, bills, and whatnot. I did all that scrapbooking when I was trying to de-stress the other afternoon. This week I don't have time to scrapbook, so I just get to walk around prayerfully-stressed. I think that's a conflict, but it's about how I feel.

this is the example for our online group's challenge

10 reasons I love being Mommy.
-Christmas is more fun with children in the house
-It's an excuse to never maintain spotless floors.
-I'm not expected to make an appearance at theatre after-parties
-Our kids think I'm normal and all other Mommies are weird
-We were blessed with "good nappers"
-Little faces light up when I get out of class
-A babble of vowels ending in "Nanni" or "Momma"
-It's fun to see Elaine becoming so independant and stubborn
-Allan is such a daredevil entertainer, it's hard not to watch him
(and safer that we do)
-Snuggling my two little shadows

Eyelet tools & Distressing Tool Cher sent me this week

Goodies from my online buddy.

Thankful

Jimmy had an interview today at Movie Tavern. He got hired and was told to get back there in a little under 2 hours so he can start training tonight. Movie Tavern is a movie theatre that has table tops, so people can eat dinner while they watch a movie. They have a full menu and everyone is waited on by Waiters, instead of standing in line for treats in the lobby. The food varies from Nachos to Steaks. Since it is Friday and Movie Tavern is a movie theatre...I don't expect Jimmy to get home until like 1am.
Jimmy had to wear a black shirt and slacks for his uniform. Tonight he is wearing a black Ranchman's shirt, because we don't think he has a solid black T-shirt (everyone knows I have a closet full of them in MY size, lol). I think we're gonna have to make a trip to Wally World to get him like 2 black shirts. Anyways, Jimmy says the job doesn't pay as much as he'd like, but something is better than nothing.

In other news: I made this Thank you card for my Grandma Polly. She really appreciates a thank you card, so I handmade one for her.

This week.

Allan can speak some Spanish evidently. He walked down the porch steps, counting down, "uno... cinco." We didn't teach it to him, so I'm blaming 'Go Diego Go'.

Elaine has been singing 'Old McDonald', but evidently he only has a duck. I asked about his Pig, and Elaine said "he doesn't have a pig, his farm is too small." Good to know.

I fixed the closet rod in Elaine's closet and now the kids share a closet. Allan use to have his own closet in my office/craft room.

I saw my financial aide situation for the summer on the UNT website:
Originally, I registered for two classes. I only need one of the classes as part of my degree plan, but had to meet the minimum credit hours for that semester to receive grants.
Well, I was awarded a grant of $750, but evidently I don't qualify for any more Stafford loans until the fall semester. So I was around $800 short for my summer tuition, after financial aide. The rest has to be paid by us.
It doesn't make much sense to pay around $800 to take a class that I don't need for my degree plan. So I opted to drop the unnecessary class and ONLY take the class that is part of my degree plan (Costume one). After dropping the extra class, I don't qualify for a grant from the government. I STILL am responsible for paying around $800, but now my family has to pay for a class that I actually NEED, instead of paying for one that I don't need to graduate.
Long story short (too late) I am taking a lighter load this summer than I expected and my family has to pay the tuition for the one class at UNT, and then also for my Spanish class at Midland College.
After design lab on Tuesday, I walked up to the office of student financial advising (in pouring rain ...bad hair day). I applied for a "Memorial Loan". I was approved for a short-term loan from UNT of $800 until late June. That gives Jimmy some time to get a job and my class is paid for in the meantime (wont get dropped for non-payment). We were both circling job ads in the classifieds today. It's slim-pickens in Denton. *pout* He's applying at Denny's and maybe at this "Michael's Kitchen" place.

Good news: Today my goodie box arrived in the mail from my online buddy, Cher. I'll post a pic of everything she sent to me. She was very generous. I sent her a box months ago of some handmade items that I put together, and this was her turn to spoil me. Before starting my homework tonight, I got to play with my new eyelet setters. I've never set eyelets before. It's very cool. It was nice to get some goodies in the mail to kinda cheer me up.

This week, I got a 97% on my Spanish pre-quiz and a 100% on the actual Spanish Quiz. *insert happy dance* I'm getting serious studying for my Spanish final. I have the option of taking it early. Not sure if I will or not. We'll see how prepared I feel. Since the weekly Pre-Quizzes can be taken as many times as I want to get a better score, I've been studying and retaking Pre-Quizzes. I replaced a 94 with a 100, replaced a 84 with a 97, and replaced a 69 with a 100. If I get all these Pre-quiz grades up, it'll help prepare me for the final and slightly improve my overall class grade.

Lil Retro Collage

I made this yesterday afternoon. It's just scrapbooking stuff and the retro picture from the internet on a wooden plaque. I put polyurethane over the whole thing.
Jimmy oooh'd and aww'd at it, so I made another larger one too. I like the paint palette in the upper right corner

I started over on this one, tearing up the one I made 2 weeks ago with the red edge and green background.

questions for my WISER readers...

I saw some variations of this idea online. I have have the same wall shelves, but like the look of the darling lace around the edges.

Does anyone know if there is a term for this look?
Is it shelf paper pre-cut like lace?
Is it fabric that is just placed on top of the entire shelf (not adhesive)?

Any info is appreciated.
p.s. ~How smart was this lady to put the decorative floral paper on the UNDER side of her shelfs. It's not like we ever SEE the tops of our shelves anyways.

I told myself...

...that my birthday gift to myself was gonna be to clean my craft room again. And like, get it to a maintainable level of pretty. :) Anyone on yahoo messenger can tell you that my outgoing message keeps saying "cleaning this room...still." I'm still working away at it.

I love love LOVE how the painted roses look on my craft tabletop. But I keep dropping other paint on the tabletop or chipping the seafoam color.

I saw a cute idea browsing craft rooms online. (see image) This lady just used one of those super cheap red gingham tablecloths over her craft table. I bet I would have a chance to wipe up paint drops before they are permanent on that type of fabric. And how CUTE would that be with my new red/white table skirt??! Gonna keep an eye out next time I have some pocket money.

Advising update / Birthday

I met with my adviser, Teresa, yesterday before design lecture. We filled out some paperwork to get me closer to graduating. She is in charge of all my requirements through the theatre department. Including the classes I am already registered for, I need 4 theatre classes to graduate. We turned in the paperwork to the College of Arts and Sciences Student Advising office. In 4-6 weeks, in the mail, I should receive my official degree plan in the mail. It will tell me what where all my credits are and what exact classes I still need to graduate. This is the official UNT tally, exactly what I need for peace of mind. I want to know the clear path with 100% certainty, so I can predict my graduation date accurately.
I'm annoyed that I can't just crank out all the classes I need in two semesters. They aren't all offered at the right times. I'm annoyed that I have to take unnecessary classes each semester to stay as a full-time student, to continue to qualify for government GRANTS (don't get paid back). At least I'll get to learn some interesting stuff before I graduate. I think the elective I am taking this summer (Intro to Moral Issues) will be thought-provoking, and it'll help me keep my Grants; always a good thing.
Yesterday was my birthday. We didn't do anything to celebrate. I had that meeting with my adviser, then lecture. Last night I cleaned in my craft room and painted a shelf & my pegboard. We ran to krogers for groceries, so I got my self a slice of pie (I don't like birthday cake). That's about it.
Jim got me a tabletop rubbermaid drawer set about a week ago for my birthday gift. It's what I asked for. I didn't have drawers deep enough for the baby food jars my craft supplies are in.

Registered for Summer classes

I have an appointment to meet with my adviser tomorrow afternoon before Design lecture. She is gonna sit down with my transcripts and do the paperwork to file my official degree plan... basically mapping out exactly what I need to take to graduate.

As far as I know right now, I need about a dozen classes (including labs). I need:
Costume one & lab (didn't complete because I went into labor)
Theatre History to 1700 (didn't complete because I went into labor)
Statistics (taking it at NCTC, because it will transfer back to UNT like I took 2 math classes)
Spanish 3 (at Midland College)
Spanish 4 (at Midland College)
Art Appreciation for Majors
Drawing Studio (last class for my minor; I can only take it AFTER my portfolio has been reviewed by a committee)
Theatre Lighting 3 & lab
Senior Colloquium

My priorities are Spanish and to Re-take the incompletes, which are in lower level theatre classes. Until the incompletes are replaced, I can't finish my upper-level theatre classes.

I didn't want to take summer school at UNT (just my Spanish classes at Midland). Sadly, I need to since those theatre classes conflict this Fall. *pout* What is cool is that the Costume class I am taking is only 5 weeks long in the summer version, instead of the normal 13 weeks. The bad news is that none of the other classes I need are offered at UNT during the summer. So I'm gonna have to take an elective, just to have enough hours to get financial aide.

So far I am registered for:
***SUMMER 2 July20th-August 1st***
Intro to Moral Issues Monday-Thursday 10-12
Costume One Monday-Thursday 12-5pm
(will register for Spanish 3 & 4 at Midland too)

***FALL 2007***
Theatre History to 1700 (did early registration since this one fills up fast and I NEED it)

Berta is a pro at care packages.

I got my birthday care package from my mom. It's surprising how much she remembers about what my favorite things. She remembered that I love tapioca and my favorite type of gum. All in all she sent a silver ring, a pink granny-style crochet throw, a ton of my favorite ink pens, some paint brushes, a pkg of dust masks like I use all the time, some snack foods including York patties, some gluesticks, some red nail polish, barrettes and a TON of spools of thread (not pictured). So cool!

I also recieved a card from my grandma Polly today. (Jimmy still forgets and calls her my 'Aunt Polly'. I don't think she minds at all.) :) It's so fun to get nice mail. It's been such a crazy week, that the surprises are nice.

QUICK Easter recap

Jeannie and Dave picked me up early before church and we all had everything ready in time for the service. There were bumps in the road, but the sermon and the skit were great. I left my camera at home and Jimmy also forgot to bring it, so our only pictures from Easter at church are the semi-professional Family photos that were taken of us. We had a set taken of the kids, Jimmy and I; and then another set was shot with Micah added to our family. When we got home after church, all of us except Micah took long naps.
Preparing for the Easter skit had me up until 2-4am for three nights straight and was up at 6am Easter morning. Sleep was appreciated. Everyone felt revived that night. I gave the kids some Easter goodies that Dad and Carol sent and we had an impromptu indoor watergun fight with the kids. I was mainly a target, but I got some fun photos.

Today (Monday) Jimmy mowed the yard and there was a sewage leak under our house. So our landlord came over to fix it. It's better now. Gonna post some photos then go to bed.

almost Resurrection Sunday

First off, Lowe's reimbersed us for the wrong price on the Oops paint. The girl just didn't ring it up right.

I was up late last night working on the props and then Jimmy was up even later with a little insomnia, so we were both Zombies today. Jim took me to the church at 9:15am for me to work on the skit. He went back home with the kiddos to get everyone back to sleep.
We started with breakfast while everyone was arriving at the church for the work day. Mmmm pancakes and turkey bacon. :) I helped with the set and we ran through the skit like 4 times. Then I helped with other Easter preparations around the church. The free family photos will be taken inside this year because it SNOWED today. We had to disassemble and move cribs out of one of the nurseries. Luckly, I remembered the trick to getting those apart quickly (done it enough times). Around 3:30 things were wrapping up. They wanted me to make one more prop for the skit and supplies were at Jeannie's house. So Jeannie (the youth pastor) said she could drive me home and we'd just swing by her house on the way. I got back to Denton around 4:30pm.
Some good news: for the skit, Jeannie's hubby needed to wear a suit but he doesn't own one. All he owns is nice black slacks. When Jeannie and Dave Schmidt dropped me off at home, we had Dave try on Jimmy's black Wedding suit jacket and it fit! So we are loaning Dave the jacket for Easter service and it will go home with us after church. It was a perfect fit, which was pretty surprising considering Dave Schmidt is 3 inches shorter than Jimmy. Jimmy is wearing his new black suit to church for Easter. :) We're all gonna look snazzy.
Not everyone could come today, so we are having another rehearsal tomorrow, early Easter morning. I have to be at the church at 8am!! But Jimmy and the kids didn't plan to go church until 11am. So Dave and Jeannie Schmidt are picking me up in the morning around 7am, to all ride in together. That way I don't have to wake up the kids early. Poor Jimmy will have to get them ready for church on his own, but I'm laying out everything tonight (including tying Jimmy's tie for his suit).

okay, back to work on the prop. I've been writting this while I'm waiting for putty to dry.
p.s. My friends Dave and Jeannie are moving to Virginia this month. :( Jeannie is my scrapbooking buddy, so that makes me sad.

trying to be productive

I've been working on props for Shiloh's Easter skit. I'm making small versions of the furniture for inside the Tabernacle.
Last night I carved the incense alter out of styrofoam and covered parts of it with putty, so it can be painted.
We just got back from Lowe's. The church is repaying us for any expenses. We had to get some paint to make everything look bronze or Gold. I picked out some brown paint from the Oops paint rack to base everything. And we picked out a can of gold spray paint, to mist it with a metallic sheen. I'm super super annoyed that we have to go BACK to Lowe's to return the brown paint because they charged us full price ($16) instead of the $5 I expected. I got it from the back of the Oops paint shelf, so it wasn't just accidentally sat down there! I figure someone must have stocked the shelf wrong. Three times the price is good reason to return to Lowe's but the inconvenience makes me MAD because I can't get started painting already! *Phew... breath breath* lol I'm gonna be working on this stuff for a while tonight.

It's all rainy looking and cold outside, so we took the kids to the indoor park at Chick-Fil-A. Another little boy who was playing in the park looked familiar, but he was with an older lady who was unfamiliar. I went up and asked if the boy's name is Jack, and sure enough he's my theatre friend's son.
I was pregnant with Allan at the same time Ted&Sarah were pregnant with little Jack. Ted is the lighting designer at UNT so we work around each other when I am painting. Little Jack gets Allan's hand-me-down shoes (since Allan is big foot). Funny enough, Jimmy recognized the shoes Jack is wearing today. They were hand-me-downs from us, and Jack's grandma said they are his favorite pair. :) That makes me feel good that the boy gets use out of them. I've been trying to get a play date put together for Jack and Allan for the last two years, so it's funny that the kids ran into each other at the playground.

in other news: I got a 90 on the Nutrition Exam I took last night.

Caitlyn's Tower

My buddy, Caitlyn, had the first tower to survive the twenty pound weight. She stopped at 20 pounds. I had another picture of her snuggling her tower before testing it, not wanting it to get hurt.

(yes, that's a mohawk, by the way).

My buddy, Erin's tower was actually...

a working well!

She had water at the bottom and a bucket that could lower to fetch the water. She did not sleep last night at all! Erin was terrified that our TA was gonna crush her well with the weights.

Testing Erin's well

Erin had the added difficulty because her well had a cup of water at the bottom, so she had to be careful of splashing water.
She only tried the twenty pound weight and quickly snatched the weight off. She was SO Happy that it survived (only three towers survived from the entire class!). She wasn't gonna try a heavier weight.

Testing MY Popsicle Tower

I put the 20 pound weight. No problem.

I put the 50 pound weight. No problem.

I put the the 50lb and 20lb weights together. No problem

So we put Gabriella on my tower, with guys to catch her if she lost her balance. She weighs 105 pounds. No problem. No creaking, swaying nadda.

My T.A. standing on my Tower

We stopped at putting 180 pounds on it.

I think I got an A.

abnormal housewife inside the tower

Popsicle Tower

it's 3:20am and I'm still up because this is due at 10am. It's hard to doze right off after completing a project, so I'm showing yall.

We had to make a tower of popsicle sticks using only sticks and Elmer's glue. It couldn't be wider than 4" (mine might be 4.5, but our TA isn't the type to check) and has to be 18" tall. My TA is gonna put a 20 pound weight on top to test it's strength. I think it'll be fine. I wanted to paint it, but the TA said we aren't allowed.
It looks a little crooked because not all my cuts were perfect squares.
What do ya think Dave? Enough diagonal braces? I left one level a little open, so the center of the tower can be seen.

It'll be good for Design expo. That's next month in the theatre department. I need to get a nice portfolio to hold photographs of my scenic painting and the renderings of my makeup designs. The 3-ring binder I have isn't cutting it. I have like a month til design expo, so I hope to get that put together.

Abnormal Housewife

This hanging sculpture was inspired by marionettes. I call her the 'abnormal housewife' because she has no head (thoughts, instincts) and when one of her strings broke, she is saving the vacuum from falling instead of saving herself.
She is totally a ploy for extra credit. We were supposed to make those towers that can support weight, but I wanted to have something to add that gives the tower a purpose when it's not holding a weight. She hangs in my popsicle stick tower, looking like she's falling and trapped.

(**I went back and switched out the photo on this post, with the clearer brighter picture**)

abstract figure hanging in tower

This abstract dude was supposed to look like Houdini hanging upside down in a straight jacket. pretty abstract and the paint job makes him literally look like poo. oh well. He serves his purpose.

p.s. Speaking of poo, in the last 2 days Allan has pee'd on the potty four times!!

waiting on wind pg 1

I had to make an example layout for the scrapbooking group I moderate. This week's challenge is to use a 'found object' in a layout, so I used a flash card. (Allan tore up one of Elaine's decks of flashcards, so I wasn't breaking up a set.)

Hey Hope- What's this guy's name? Didn't he work with Scott?? Thanks.

waiting for wind page2

I was happy to find that I had this little fisher boy green tag, because it works perfectly with the dialog that Hope wrote in the original babybook.
"We should have brought our fishing rods, David." -Jimmy
"I've got some string, but no bait" -David

Here's some wall art I'm working on...

It's a piece of wood that was routed around the edges by Pawpaw. I painted that Red. Then I glued down the green patterned paper and printed the housewives picture, also gluing it to the front. I'm gonna add some rickrack or something to finish making it snazzy... less 2-D. Still thinking it out.
Spanish quiz on Tuesday, so tomorrow is all cleaning house and studying for that.

Dotted Table Skirt

The Hancock's Fabrics in Denton is going out of business. Jimmy took me after church and said I had 10mins to shop (he and Micah were sitting in the car with the kids). I quickly found some Red fabric with large Minnie Mouse sized polka dots that was on sale for $2.39 per yard. Happy early Birthday to me!
This afternoon I sewed a table skirt for my craft table from the red fabric. I made the table skirt like it was a curtain (pocket on top, hem on bottom). I wrapped thick craft wire around the front 3 sides of the craft table, to act as a tension rod for the 'curtain'. It's a bold look, but I like it. Very me. :D
I just wanted to cover the stuff that is stored under the table (large rubbermaid containers and tackleboxes full of Painting gear). It's all organized stuff. I didn't want to stare at my supplies all the time.
